This British Pattern 1841 Sea Service socket bayonet is a conversion of the India Pattern 1841 where Lovell’s lug was added in 1844 together with a filed sighting notch on the collar. Socket length is 4″(102mm), Blade length 17″(434mm). Original maker was WOOLLEY & Co Birmingham as stamped to the blade with various proof marks. The Birmingham proof of crown over B is added to the lug. This bayonet is similar to the P1841 Artillery Carbine bayonet (BBB No.91) but the notable difference is the square shoulders and the slot further from the collar. A scarce bayonet in very good condition with aged patina/staining but no rust/pitting. The number “35” is engraved to the socket.
No scabbard. (Reference BBB No.41 page 56 – Confirmed by Graham Priest 16 July 2020). British & Commonwealth Bayonets describe this bayonet as the Pattern 1839 Sea Service (BCB B141)
