Description
British Pattern 1853 Artillery Sword Bayonet 1st Type is a very scarce bayonet. This brass gripped yataghan bayonet is from the John Watts Collection (The Bayonet Book by John Watts and Peter White fame) that came to Western Australia in the 1980’s. Whilst this bayonet has a brass grip the crossguard is wrought iron. The bayonet is in good condition but with a very dark blade and small pepper pitting. Release button works well and spring is sound. There is no scabbard.
This bayonet appears to be the actual bayonet illustrated in British and Commonwealth Bayonets book on page 112. This bayonet is marked to the pommel “V over CPA over 32” – Cinque Port Artillery. The spring is secured by a screw. (Reference WW 745 and BCB B146 and pages 110 to 112)
