Description
The British Pattern 1863 Whitworth sword bayonet is of the yataghan style and was manufactured at the R.S.A.F. Enfield. This was a trials rifle approved in December 1863 and only 8,000 were ordered. It is believed that with overruns total production was under 9,000.
This bayonet is identical with the Patt. ’58 short rifle model with the exception of the circular/special mortise slot and the smaller muzzle ring diameter of 20mm. Bayonet is in good condition but has been cleaned at some stage and is the “bar on band” type. The scabbard is in very good condition with all the leather stitching intact. Sheet metal locket and chape show aged pepper pitting and two minor dents to the locket rear. Number “S 14” to the locket mouth. (Reference BCB B174 and WW 767).
