Description
This Dutch Model 1873 sword bayonet is a conversion of the first pattern to the second pattern where the short locking spring was converted to a long locking spring and the old holes filled by solid brass, which can clearly be seen in the photographs. The ricasso is marked P STEVENS over MAASTRICHT and the other side has a “Crown over JF”. The bayonet was manufactured for the navy and to fit the Beaumont rifle. There is an old serial number “C 708” to one side of the crossguard and a newer stamped serial number “4708” on the other side followed by an inspection mark “Crown over B”.
The scabbard has an overall brown patina without major damage, however, it is missing the locket/spring for the retention of the bayonet. It has a serial number “T 83464” on the rear side. (References WW 492, JN 145/3 and K Vol 2 #470)
