Description
Japanese Pattern 1856 (1860) yataghan bayonet for a bar on barrel Enfield rifle. This bayonet is a Japanese copy as there are no makers marks or ordnance markings. There is no stamped chrysanthemum marking, so presumably will be a training or other government department issue. Large kanji markings to the scabbard front leather face and this is also considered extremely scarce. The workmanship of this bayonet is quite poor when compared to British and German makers. The crossguard is malformed and the blade protrudes through to the back of the crossguard. Decorative engraved lines to the locket and chape are quite different to the to the British issue. The serial “567” is stamped to the crossguard along with a small “13” to the rear of the pommel. Both serial numbers are not in kanji. Overall the bayonet and scabbard are in very good condition. The scabbard chape is slightly loose. (Reference LABAR 2, 3 and 8)
