Description
This lot of British Spike bayonets model No.4 MkII were manufactured by Stevens-Savage at the plant in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, USA. for the British Lee-Enfield No. 4 rifle during World War II.
The bayonets are marked with the model number over the typical marking of a small “S” or small “S” within a square (or similar Savage maker’s mark as detailed below) on the socket block and often on the locking mechanism/plunger but not always. In some instances a serial number can be seen stamped to the socket block.
Bayonets pictured in this lot are marked as follows:
- Small “S”
- Small “S” with a square
- Medium sized “S” in a square
- Larger sized “S”
- Larger sized “S” in a larger sized square
- Variations to the font and depth of stamping can also be seen.
Whilst there are basically four examples photographed there are approximately 30 for sale. Where one photo shows the marking on the socket block the following photo shows the markings, if any, to the locking mechanism.
These bayonets can either be in the steel Mk1 scabbard or the plastic body MkIII scabbard.
